Choice Agenda

Your Care, Your Choice

What is CHOICE?

CHOICE means that you can choose which service you attend for routine outpatient mental health care via GP referrals.  These include services such as, Memory Assessment and IAPT Services for example.

CHOICE means that you can use a service outside of your local area.  You may choose to attend a service which is closer to your place of work, a service that has improved outcomes or a service that has lower waiting times.

The introduction of Choice is part of the drive to achieve parity with physical health care and increase your control of your care.

CHOICE applies to routine outpatient mental health care only and does not include;

  • Inpatient, Urgent or Emergency Treatment
  • Home Based Treatment
  • Substance Misuse Services
  • Criminal Justice or Secure Services
  • Detention under the Mental Health Act
  • If you are already receiving treatment from GMMH for the same condition

There may be times where CHOICE is not clinically appropriate, your GP should discuss this with you, some reasons are set out below:

  • If you are receiving care from other providers in your local area, choosing a mental health service outside this may lead to disjointed care.
  • If you require inpatient care or crisis care, this would be with your local provider and your care would need to be transferred.
  • Impact of travel on your care – if you live outside of our catchment area we are unable to provide home visits and you will need to attend our service location for your appointments.

How do I choose a service?

Your GP will discuss options with you and help you choose a service which is right for you.

Some key things you might want to think about are:

  • How easy is it for you to travel to the service of choice?
  • How likely is it that you may need crisis care from another provider?
  • Do you feel you have complex needs with other local providers involved in your care?
  • What are the waiting times and how does this compare with others?
  • What evidence do the providers have about the quality of their service?
  • What do other patients think?

Please discuss this with your GP.

What happens next?

Your GP will discuss CHOICE with you and including any issues about your individual needs and circumstances.  If it is appropriate for you to be referred to one of our services, your GP will refer you with a summary of your needs.

Once GMMH receive the referral we will be in touch to arrange an appointment.

When you attend your first appointment, your needs will be assessed by one of our clinicians to agree care and treatment.  Any issues around clinically appropriateness will be highlighted and a future care plan agreed.

Given the outcome of the assessment you may choose to continue to remain under the care of GMMH or be referred back to your GP for referral to another service.

If you have been referred to one of our services via CHOICE, you will be sent a short questionnaire to complete.  The questionnaire is about your experience of CHOICE, and all answers will be confidential.  The questionnaires will allow us to improve our service users experience of CHOICE going forward.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I be referred by another route and choose which service to attend?

A: CHOICE currently only applies to GP referrals.  If you would like to choose one of our services, please discuss this with your GP.

Q: Can I choose to attend a service which is not on the list?

A: Only services which are listed on our CHOICE webpage can be accessed via CHOICE.  Most of our other services have specific care pathways which are designed to meet the needs of a particular group of service users.  The Trust provides services which are not commissioned by the NHS e.g. substance misuse services, these services are not available via CHOICE.

Q: What other care providers are available?

There are many providers of mental health care, the following list are providers of NHS mental health services in Greater Manchester.

Other non-NHS providers are also available.
