GMMH’s Architect Wins Architect of the Year at National Design Awards

Andrew Arnold, the architect behind many of GMMH’s state-of-the-art buildings was awarded ‘Architect of the Year’ at the recent Design in Mental Health Awards.  Andrew, of Gilliing Dod Architects won the prestigious honour at the event which celebrates excellence in the design of mental health facilities.

Andrew specialised in mental health design after graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University.  During his career, he has overseen projects totalling in excess of £600million and March 2018 saw the completion of Andrew’s 50th project.
His in-depth knowledge of issues surrounding modern mental health services has resulted in buildings such as the Junction 17 Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) where he oversaw the purpose-built eight-bedded unit.  Every aspect of the young person’s experience was taken into consideration at the start of the design process and this has resulted in a therapeutic and recovery-focussed place for young service users.  The imaginative interior design scheme for this project was based around the concept of different mythical creatures, with young people at the heart of the design to provide a safe, yet homely healthcare facility.

Andrew Maloney, GMMH’s Executive Director with responsibility for capital projects said, “We are lucky to have had an architect of Andrew’s calibre on some of our flagship projects.  Research has proven that a service user’s physical surroundings can have a massive impact on their mental health and recovery.  It is a testament to Andrew that, thanks to his commitment to service user engagement, GMMH can offer a high standard of care, in state-of-the-art environments, making us a true leader in our field.  We offer Andrew our congratulations on his well-deserved award.”
Andrew Arnold said of his win, “I have been very lucky to work with some great clients, and it is amazing what you can achieve when you surround yourself with such talented people.”
