About C-TRU

C-TRU is a collaboration between The University of Manchester and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust to help the NHS better recognise, understand and support people who have experienced trauma.

Our ambition is to conduct high-quality and cutting-edge research to improve the recovery, resilience and wellbeing of people who have experienced trauma.

Trauma is a term used to describe several psychological and emotional responses to events that are very stressful, frightening or distressing. These life experiences can happen at any age and, amongst many others, include physical, emotional or sexual abuse, neglect, exposure to war, and loss or separation from a loved one.

While everyone has a different reaction to trauma, in some people it can cause long-lasting difficulties.

  • The RESTART Trial

We are conducting a new clinical trial to see if it would be useful to offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Trauma Focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), for people who have experienced distressing life events and psychological difficulties.

  • Staff Trauma in Inpatient Mental Health

The Staff TIME project aims to find out what is helpful or unhelpful when seeking support by carrying out interviews with members of staff. This will help us collect information about your experiences on acute inpatient wards and with staff support, and any suggestions you may have to improve staff support.
