A further important permanent appointment has been made to GMMH’s executive team – with Claus Madsen joining the Trust in October as Chief People Officer.

A rigorous recruitment process ran last month (July) with several high calibre candidates putting themselves forward for the role – demonstrating that outstanding leaders have a real desire to be part of GMMH’s recovery and future aspirations.

A panel that included Chief Executive, Karen Howell OBE, Chair, Professor Tony Warne, and other executives and non-executive directors were impressed by Claus’ commitment to developing high-performing and values-led workforces, both in his own organisation and at national level for the NHS.

Chief Executive, Karen Howell OBE, said:

“I briefly worked with Claus for the last year of my time at Wirral Community Health and Care, so I’ve seen firsthand the leadership and innovation he brings to his work, and I’m looking forward to working with him again here at GMMH from October this year.

“Claus has more than two decades’ experience as a senior people leader with a background in both the public and private sectors and will be another excellent permanent addition to the team alongside the appointments of Salli Midgley (Chief Nurse) and Carol Harris (Chief Operating Officer) who both join us in the coming weeks.”

Claus, said:

“I am so excited to be joining Team GMMH in October. The Trust has a lot of challenges but also enormous amounts of opportunities and potential.

"Delivering outstanding care to patients and service users requires an organisation where staff feel they belong, where they can thrive and perform to the best of their abilities and feel safe to contribute and challenge.

"We need to create a psychologically safe workplace free from fear where staff are being supported to develop and fulfil their potential.

"I can’t wait to become part of the Trust’s journey towards excellence and taking the lead on the People and Culture aspects of that. I have met so many lovely and dedicated colleagues already, and I look forward to meeting many more when I join on 21 October."

From 2016 until March 2023, Claus worked at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

There, he led on the development of the organisational values and behavioural framework and development and implementation of their People Strategy and its alignment to the NHS People Plan and Promise.

He also chaired the Culture and Leadership Network for Ambulance Services across the UK.

Nationally, Claus is involved in the Future of HR & OD in the NHS as a member of NHS England’s (NHSE) People Professional Development Board.

He is also a member of the Department of Health and Social Care’s Messenger Leadership Review Implementation Office, focusing on translating the seven key recommendations into tangible solutions to transform leadership and management across health and social care.

Claus is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and holds a BA (Hons) in Teaching, an MA in Educational Sociology and an MSc in Leadership and Management.
