Our shortlisters

The GMMH Domestic & Porter Service - Healthcare Cleaning Team of the Year

Our super star domestic teams at all Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) sites, including inpatient areas, have worked extremely hard this year; and have excelled in all their monthly National Cleaning Standards audits.

Over the past 12 months, we have experienced significant cultural change as the team have been empowered and upskilled to achieve our collective goals. Internal progression has been much better and our workforce are able to learn and develop into new roles when ready.

We conducted a Trust - wide productivity review based on the British Institute of Cleanings Sciences’ productivity calculator. We were able to evidence creating and relocating resource to match the patient needs to improve effectiveness and best use of resources . In addition, we opened a brand new £105.9million adult mental health inpatient hospital called North View in Manchester, our team providing services on time and to a high standard.

We have managed all these activities with a very notable achievement – our PLACE score. The nationally reported PLACE score benchmarks all UK health facilities against a national average. Over the past 2 year s we have increased our score above the minimum requirements, but this year we achieved an incredible 99.16% - well in excess of the previous years national average.

Achieving this score whilst opening North View and undertaking the Productivity review is an amazing achievement. Sam and Nathan have been inspirational in sharing the challenge, driving change and ensuring our Trust values and embedded deep in the team.

The Porter Team at North View - Portering Team of the Year.

In the past 12 months , Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust has opened the doors to a wonderful new £105.9m mental health unit situated on the North Manchester General Hospital site . The transitioning period ran alongside the continued use of Park House, the facility to be replaced. Our Porter Team really stepped up to the mark as they had to complete duties across two facilities simultaneously.

The Porter team became the face of Facilities in the month prior to opening as they provided a combined receipt & distribution role with a security presence. Porters always become the experts in way - finding in hospitals and their knowledge and friendly approach made them invaluable in keeping the new facility secure.

The team were also under pressure to ensure they were not behind with their other key functions and maintained an excellent service throughout the transition. During the patient transfer process, the Porters went above and beyond to support in the secure transfer of 150 patients belongings. Nine wards worth of items were moved carefully and were reunited with the correct teams. But one of their greatest achievements was one of the most basic, to achieve a fully compliant waste management system - two hospitals worth of waste and all the waste produced in the opening of North View. The team managed a no cross - contamination process (overseeing many contractors and facilities staff) which is phenomenal.

It is incredible on reflection that we moved hundreds of staff, 150 inpatients and 50 years of accumulated belongings, office equipment and ward stock, in a short window with maximum effort from the team; with amazing outcomes that have supported the most vulnerable people in our care. A truly dedicated team that inspire with their actions.

Congratulations to our Domestic and Porter Services, and good luck!
