North View shortlisted for more awards

Our award-winning inpatient mental health hospital, North View, continues to draw positive attention after being shortlisted for more honours.

The project is in the running in two categories at the Design in Mental Health Awards: Project of the Year - New Build UK and Outside Spaces.

For the Project of the Year – New Build UK category, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) is joined by partners Gilling Dod Architects and IHP, the unit having officially been opened last month by Manchester boxing legend Ricky Hatton MBE.

The project cost £105.9million, has 150 beds and is part of the New Hospitals Programme Masterplan for the North Manchester General Hospital site.

Co-produced by service users, clinical stakeholders and nursing leads, it reimagines the approach to healthcare delivery at the heart of the community and has been designed to be both cost-effective and to maximise clinical benefits.

GMMH is also teamed with architects Gilling Dod and landscape architects Iteriad for the North View entry into the Outside Spaces category. The building and its landscaping is ‘biophilic’ in design, which essentially means it is themed on connecting and imitating the natural environment.

On-site there are 22 private patient courtyards, gardens/roof-garden spaces and a large public space at the front of the building as well as its surroundings – all designed to provide privacy and security.

Marc Reed, Associate Director of Capital, Estates & Facilities for GMMH and Project Director for North View, said:

“We are delighted to learn of this exciting news. Throughout the planning, design and opening, we have always emphasised that North View is more than just a building, it is an outstanding facility which both supports the recovery of our service users and serves the communities of North Manchester.”

Earlier this year the North View Project Team was also shortlisted for the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Awards Project Team of the Year Award which celebrates the collaboration and combined efforts of groups of people working together to meet a combined goal. The project has also been shortlisted in the same awards for a Considerate Constructors National Site Award.

North View scooped the prestigious Best Specialist and Dementia Care Design at the Healthcare Design Awards 2025, last month, which celebrates the best of healthcare design. In 2022 it also landed an accolade for service user engagement for building design in the Design in Mental Health Awards.

In February of this year, it was a finalist in the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of the Year award.
