Smoking Cessation and Mental Health
This course has been designed to support staff in implementing and developing smoking cessation approaches in inpatient and community settings. The content includes a consideration of the prevalence and meaning of tobacco smoking amongst people with poor mental health, initiating and supporting tobacco use reduction and information about the types and use of nicotine replacement products.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course participants will be able to
- summarise the current information regarding tobacco and smoking
- outline the relationship between smoking and mental health
- discuss the motivations for, and challenges of, reducing and/or stopping smoking for people with poor mental health
- use the 'Cut down to quit' and/or 'Stopping Smoking' packs as applicable and appropriate.
- identify the effects of smoking and stopping smoking on drug metabolism and recommend appropriate nicotine replacement products
