Working in Mental Health School Teams
Wigan
Wigan Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) offers mental health support to schools across the Wigan Borough. The offer consists of two teams School Link and Mental Health Support Teams (MHST). The School Link and Mental Health Support Teams are evolving teams and encourage innovation, continuous learning and professional development. Practitioners are encouraged to work creatively and collaboratively to support the development of mental health provision across Wigan schools.
The MHST team consists of Educational Mental Health Practitioners and CBT Therapists and the school Link team consists of 8 practitioners who are qualified Registered Mental Health Nurses and Social Workers. The services offer early intervention working within the THRIVE framework components of:
• Getting advice - providing signposting information and assistance to children and young people, parent/carers and school staff
• Getting help - providing evidence-based early interventions in individual and group structured sessions
MHST works across 38 schools and three colleges in Wigan. Services offered include:
• Delivering evidence-based interventions for mild to moderate mental health issues
• Supporting the school’s Mental Health Lead to deliver and embed a whole school and college approach to mental health
• Providing schools and colleges with timely advice and signposting, and liaising with specialist services to ensure that young people are getting the right support at the right time
A School Link Practitioner is assigned to each school and will work with children, young people and their families providing:
• Consultations with school staff and families, offering advice, signposting, and liaison with external specialist services to help children and young people to get the right support and stay in education. (In schools who have accessed the MHST offer, these consultations will be conducted by MHST Practitioners)
• To offer direct, psychoeducation sessions to parents/carers and young people who are presenting with mild to moderate mental health problems, including those presenting with mild to moderate risk
• Mental health promotion by working to upskill school staff, young people, and parents. We aim to normalise mental health within schools, reduce stigma and raise awareness of self-help and self-management strategies.
Bolton
Bolton MHST is dedicated to enhancing the mental health of children and young people (primarily for ages five to 18) by providing mental health support in schools and colleges. Our skilled team comprises Education Mental Health Practitioners, Children and Young People’s Wellbeing Practitioners and Cognitive Behaviour Therapists, trained in delivering and supervising evidenced-based interventions for common mental health difficulties. As a blended service, we work in partnership with the local voluntary sector to deliver diverse and holistic mental health support.
Our service focuses on three core functions:
• Low-intensity interventions: We offer evidence-based interventions for common mental health difficulties, ensuring timely and effective support
• Whole school and college approach: Collaborating with education settings and school mental health leads, we assist in introducing a whole school and college approach
• Advice and consultation: Our team provides timely advice to schools and colleges while coordinating with specialist services to ensure children and young people receive the right support
