Working in Police Custody

Police Sergeant talking to a Liaison and Diversion colleague

In each custody across Greater Manchester Police (GMP), there is a Liaison and Diversion (L&D) office. Our offices are equipped with GMP computers, so we can easily identify the needs of people in custody. We also have access to a GMMH computer system, which gives us access to all internal systems. In the custody setting, there are kitchens with appliances for use on-site and facilities are usually located within a short distance of a town centre. Each shift there is a ‘briefing’ which includes all custody-based staff. These meetings are useful for building relationships with those who work outside of the NHS, and they bring us together to discuss individuals’ health and vulnerabilities.

After deciding the best route for somebody, we work with the Custody Sergeants to ensure all tasks are completed effectively. The Custody Sergeants and Detention Officers are with us all the time and can support when needed. Working collaboratively with third party providers and other services, there are lots of networking opportunities and relationship building external to the NHS. For example, you may need to liaise with Youth Justice Teams or Children's and Adult Social Care.

Although access to support is readily available through the wider Liaison and Diversion Team or Custody Staff, there is a real sense of independence in this setting. We can manage our own day in a style that best suits our individual working styles and preferences. This can suit someone who enjoys managing their own workload and is a self-starter by nature.
